The Riffelhaus 1853 is proud to have received
the following quality labels and awards.
The “Bike Hotel” distinction is given to hotels that have already been awarded a star rating, and indicates special facilities for mountain bikers. The Swiss Hotel Association monitors the implementation of the relevant criteria. The Riffelhaus 1853 offers cyclists optimal conditions to recover from demanding rides and prepare themselves for new trails.
The “Typically Swiss” label identifies establishments that are committed to tradition and authenticity. A jury made up of experts from a number of industries ensures that establishments bearing the title fulfil the requisite criteria. These include a traditional building style, use of local materials for the interior decor, and regional and Swiss products on the menus.
Certificates of quality management
This standard sets out globally recognized standards for an excellent quality and management system. It indicates that an organization has a certified/evaluated management system and is dedicated to ensuring high quality standards. The Riffelhaus 1853 was awarded this certificate by the Swiss Association for Quality and Management Systems (SQS)
Certificates of environmental management
This standard sets out globally standardized requirements for an environmental management system. The Matterhorn Group is ISO 14001:2015 certified by the Swiss Association for Quality and Management Systems (SQS). Both at the Riffelhaus 1853 and at all the other hotels and businesses within the Group, it follows a targeted sustainable environmental policy, encompassing energy use to waste prevention and recycling to general reductions in emissions.
By voluntarily participating in this programme run by the Energy Agency of the Swiss Private Sector (EnAW), the Matterhorn Group is able to clearly demonstrate its commitment to climate protection. The “CO2 & kWh reduced” certificate issued by the EnAW is recognized by the federal government, the cantons and industry partners. The Matterhorn Group is actively reducing its CO2 emissions across all business units and companies, and also continuously optimizes its overall energy efficiency.

By defining objectives across the entire value chain and implementing these objectives through suitable measures, we achieve an improved level of environmental sustainability in the following environmental sub-areas: Energy use, Conservation of natural resources, Waste prevention and recycling, Climate protection and Reduction of emissions.
The corporate purpose of Matterhorn Group AG is to manage hotels and restaurants. As part of its corporate purpose, Matterhorn Group AG operates five hotels in and around the Zermatt mountain region. These include the five-star Grand Hotel Zermatterhof in Zermatt, but also the 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat and the Riffelhaus – 1853 in the sensitive Zermatt mountain territory. It also manages about a dozen other restaurants with a total seating capacity of around 5,500, most in the Zermatt mountain region.
